The outstanding Formula Car manufactured by the 22-member student team, led by captain Arpit Upadhyay, in the United Kingdom turned heads at the event.
The formula racing car built by Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) engineering students has been judged as being at the 31st best in the world in the cost and manufacturing category at the Formula Student 2016 competition in London.
The team scored 58.75 marks in the Cost, Manufacturing and Sustainability category. The total cost of the car’s development is estimated at Rs 25 lakhs. Talking to News18, team leader Arpit Upadhyay said, “We are trying to get in touch with Indian car makers for further research and development on our project and make it more sophisticated.”
The students’ delegation returned from London event on Sunday. Elaborating on the project, Arpit said the competition in this category for Indian students was very tough in comparison to European ones as they were solidly backed by top car makers like Audi.”
The team members started building the car in May 2015 and it was finalized a year later in May 2015. All the team members-Arpit included, Ayush Mittal, Anchal Varshney, Mehul Varshney, Irfan Khan, Haani Farooqi, Mridul Sharma, Mohd Faraz, Sharif Kidwai, Shubham Varshney, Asim Noor, Faizan Anwar, Hamzah Khan, Asnal Rizvi, Hammad Murtaza, Kashif Zafar, Syed Faraz, Faraz Ahmad, Sagar Varshney, Areeb Mahmood, Wamiq Hashmi and Aman Agarwal-participated in the event.
The team consisted of students from all four years batches of Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering departments. Talking about the competition, another team member Areeb Mehmood said, “The competition’s first day was dedicated to the technical inspection of the cars where all the parameters were checked for the racing application. It was an interactive session in which the students were involved in a discussion with the car design experts. It was a remarkable experience in terms of exposure, which helped us to learn new concepts and quality of management.” The team members also said that that they will pass this experience to their juniors to make a better car next year which will yield much more appreciation for the University and the country.
Arpit said that team worked tirelessly for three days to re-assemble the car in a very cold and chilly London weather. With the participation in the London event, the AMU team has also qualified to participate in Formula Bharat 2017 in January 2017. The AMU team was representing India at the event with teams from IIT Bombay, Delhi Technological University (DTU) and Chitkara University in all the static events showcasing the brilliant cost analysis skills.
The AMU team has earlier won ‘Formula Student India’, the most popular formula car award in the country.
About the Formula Student event:
The Formula Student (FS) is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition operated by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME).
The Universities from across the world participate in the challenge to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle.
