The Delhi Capitals registered their first victory of the second season of the 2024 Women’s Premier League after trouncing the UP Warriorz by 9 wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday.
Chasing 120 runs for victory, the DC opening pair of Shafali Varma and skipper Meg Lanning got the side off to a roaring start, putting on 57 runs for the opening wicket in six overs.

The former emerged as the more aggressive batter at the start of the chase as she took the aerial route more than once, never allowing any of the Warriorz’ bowlers to settle down and got to her half-century in 36 balls, with a six off Deepti Sharma.
The latter, who was dropped on 15, opted for a measured approach at the start but picked up pace after the Powerplay, using the sweep to great effect to the likes of Sophie Ecclestone and Gouhar Sultana.
The pair put on the first century run partnership of the tournament, but right at the doorstep of victory Lanning fell to Ecclestone, a ball after getting to her fifty, caught by Vrinda Dinesh at square leg.
Earlier, Marizanne Kapp ran through the Warriorz top-order, claiming the wickets of Dinesh (0 off 2 balls), Tahlia McGrath (1 run off 8 balls) and skipper Healy (13 runs off 15 balls) to leave them tottering at 21-3 after six overs.
While Kapp would have been delighted with all three wickets, the one that might stay in her mind longer than the other two would be the ball that dismissed McGrath. The orb pitched on middle stump and McGrath, rightfully, played for the line but then seamed away to hit the off stump. Kapp ended her quota inside the opening 10 overs with her figures reading 3 for 5 in 4 overs.
The onus fell on Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat to rescue the innings, but left-arm spinner Radha Yadav dented the Warriorz twice in the space of two overs, removing Harris for 17 and Kiran Navgire for 10 to leave them in a whole heap of trouble at 57 for 5.
Poonam Khemnar tried to put the pressure back on DC by taking on the pacers and put on 28 runs with Sehrawat for the sixth wicket, before she fell trying to ramp a ball from Shikha Pandey and was caught at fine leg for 10.
Sehrawat showed further glimpse of the promise that had made her a well-known name after the Under-19 World Cup last year and took 12 runs off Annabel Sutherland’s third over to bring the 100 up for the Warriorz. But in her attempt to up the ante further, Sehrawat became Yadav’s third victim of the evening, bowled for 45 runs in 41 balls.
The final flourish that Warriorz desperately needed did not come as they finished on 119 for 9 in their 20 overs, with Yadav claiming figures of 4 for 20 in 4 overs.
Navgire, Sehrawat injured during DC’s chase
If the margin of defeat was not bad enough, the Warriorz stared at the possibility of losing two key Indian players after Navgire and Sehrawat were injured during DC’s chase.
Both injuries were sustained in the 12th over of the innings with the former suffering a blow to her head after misjudging a skier off Varma’s bat while the latter hurting her right knee while diving on the mid-wicket boundary.
