New Delhi: The markets closed on a firm note after witnessing choppy trade. Buying was seen in auto, technology, banking and select oil, metal, pharma and FMCG stocks. However, capital goods and consumer durables stocks lost ground.
The Sensex closed up 33.13 points or 0.35 per cent at 9372.30. It touched an intraday high of 9413.70 and an intraday low of 9328.76.
The Nifty closed up 12.35 points or 0.44 per cent at 2835.25. It touched an intraday high of 2846.65 and intraday low of 2818.65.
The CNX Midcap Index closed up 13 points or 0.33 per cent at 4002.90. It touched an intraday high of 4005.60 and an intraday low of 3981.35.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed up 15.64 points at 5867.63. The BSE Midcap Index closed up 8.10 points at 4386.91.
The total market turnover was at Rs 32785.35 crore.
FIIs were net sellers of Rs 17.13 crore in F&O and Rs 85.26 crore in Nifty Futures and they were net buyers of Rs 66 crore in Stock Futures on December 21.
Market Regulator, Sebi is now investigating 68 more stocks (penny stocks) of small companies to find if anything was wrong in their trading, leading to astronomical rise in the scrip prices till September.
If they found guilty then manipulators face a penalty of Rs 25 crore or three times the value of the damage done by the company.
India has planned to export of 20,000 tonnes of Sugar to EU.
Auto stocks like Amtek Auto, TVS Motor, Exide Industries, Tata Motors, Tube Investment, Sundram, Bharat Forge, Sundaram-Clayton and Bajaj Auto firmed up. The BSE Auto Index closed up 0.52 per cent at 4262.11.
The BSE IT Index closed up 0.44% at 3709.93 amid buying in Hexaware Tech, I-Flex Solutions, HCL Info, Satyam, Wipro, Infosys, Flextronics and HCL Tech.
Banking stocks including HDFC Bank, UTI Bank, PNB, Allahabad Bank and SBI also ended higher. The BSE Bankex closed up 0.32 per cent at 5081.39.
Several paper and sugar stocks also moved higher.
Some FMCG, metal, oil and pharma stocks also gained. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.17 per cent at 1636.12. The BSE Metal Index closed down 0.14 per cent at 6461.02. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 0.10 per cent at 4308.88.
However, capital goods stocks like Greaves Cotton, Aban LoydChiles, Praj Industries, Crompton Greaves, KEC International, Lakshmi Machine, L&T, BEML, Carborundum and Siemens ended lower on Thursday. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.49 per cent at 5674.13.
Some consumer durables, cement, hotel, media, shipping, tea and telecom stocks also lost ground. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed down 0.27 per cent at 3191.12.
