The markets closed deep in the negative terrain after showing some recovery in the noon trades.

New Delhi: The day saw a lot of action with RPL listing and the Fed rate hike of 25 bps to 5 per cent.

The BSE Sensex closed at 12,435.41 with a loss of over 177 points. The Nifty closed down 58 points.

The BSE Midcap closed at 6,004.43 down 29 points.

The BSE SmallCap closed at 7,728.82 down 1.08 per cent.

Tata Power, SBI, ONGC, Sun Pharma and HPCL were among the top laggards on the bourses.

Hindalco, HDFC, Wipro, HDFC Bank, VSNL and Dabur India were the top gainer on the indices.

All the BSE indices closed in red. Scrips from oil & gas, banking, consumer durables, metal and cement sector witnessed selling at the bourses.

Reliance was the major loser on the Sensex down 5.3 per cent.

The BSE Oil & gas Index closed at 6137.77 down 4.01 per cent. Selling was seen in MRPL, Reliance, BPCL, Kochi Refinery, Petronet LNG and GAIL.

Consumer durables stocks like Whirlpool, Titan Industries, Samtel Color and BPL slipped on the bourses. The BSE Consumer Durables Index close down 1.46 per cent at 3,627.12.

The BSE auto Index also slips 1.36 per cent at 5,689.53. Stocks like Amtek Auto, Hind Motors, Escorts, MRF, Tata Motors, TVS Motor and Maruti Udyog closed in red.

The BSE Metal Index was down 1.33 per cent at 11,090.17. Stocks including Welspun Guj, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Jindal Saw and Jindal Stainless closed lower.

Pharma stocks like FDC, Matrix Lab, Orchid Chemical, Biocon, Ranbaxy Labs and Sun Pharma were also plunged. The BSE Healthcare Index closed down 1.7 per cent at 4,032.54.

Banking stocks like IOB, Union Bank, PNB, SBI, Canara Bank and Allahabad Bank slipped on the bourses. The BSE Bankex closed at 5,748.70 down 1.04 per cent.

Profit booking was also seen in scrips from FMCG, capital goods and technology sector.

The NSE cash turnover stood at Rs 10845.19 crore (108.45 billion). The NSE F&O was Rs 36920.88 crore (369.2 billion). The BSE cash turnover was of Rs 5026.14 crore (50.26 billion). The total market turnover was 52792.21 crore (527.92 billion).

On the corporate front, ADAG to develop Mumbai Metro Project, the project cost bid is Rs 2,300 cr.

Era Constructions has bagged Rs 62 crore order.

RPL listed at Rs 101.95 on BSE versus the issue price of Rs 60 and closed at 85.45. The RPL BSE Cash turnover was Rs 640 crore, its BSE cash turnover stood at Rs 2,770 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was Rs 2,500 crore. The total RPL turnover was of Rs 5,910 crore.

Aditya Birla Mineral will list on the Australian Stock Exchange on Friday.

Tata group plans to merge VSNL, Tata Tele & Tata Tele (Mah).
