It was a very disappointing close for markets as they ended in red after a highly volatile session. The midcaps and smallcap indices which were trading with hefty gains in the morning came off significantly from the day's high. The midcap index ended with moderate losses but the smallcap index managed to close marginally in green.
All the BSE sector indices closed in red. Heavy selling pressure was seen in capital goods, metal, oil & gas, realty and metal stocks.
The top laggards on the indices were Maruti Suzuki, BHEL, Infosys, DLF, Hindalco, Unitech, Nalco, Sterlite Ind, Tata Power, Sun Pharma.
Sensex was down 352.56 points or 1.80% at 19280.80, and the Nifty down 126.75 points or 2.15% at 5780.90.
About 1658 shares have advanced, 1353 shares declined, and 56 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 8,625.87 down 1.2%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 10,691.16 up 0.2%.
The BSE Bankex was down 1.4% at 10,764.53. Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Centurion Bank, Federal Bank, Karnataka Bank, PNB moved downwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 2.2% at 20,349.42. Triveni Engg, BHEL, Praj Industries, Areva T&D, Crompton Greave closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,339.29 down 1.4%. Hind Motors, Exide Industrie, TVS Motor, Maruti Suzuki closed lower.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 17,310.69 down 2%. NALCO, Hindalco, Sterlite Ind, Shree Precoated, Jindal Saw closed lower.
The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,197.79 down 1.2%. Dabur India, United Spirits, Nestle, Tata Tea, ITC closed higher.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 12,136.58 down 2.7%. Essar Oil, BPCL, IOC, ONGC, Petrnet LNG ended in red.
The BSE IT Index was down 2.6% at 4,054.64. I-Flex Solution, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, TCS closed lower.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 21015.93 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 73178.98 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 8579.40 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 102774.31 crore.
Markets slip: Cap goods, IT, pwer stocks down
The frontline indices have slipped in red on account of selling pressure in capital goods, IT and power stocks. The midcap index is trading with moderate gains but the smallcaps are holding out their gains.
At 2.02 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 106.38 points or 0.54% at 19526.98, and the Nifty down 50.40 points or 0.85% at 5857.25.
About 1966 shares have advanced, 1034 shares declined, and 66 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap index is up over 0.4% and the smallcap index is up 1.4%.
Rupee is trading strong at 39.33 against the dollar.

Mkt trades mixed: Frontliners subdued, smallcaps up
The frontliners continue to consolidate at the higher levels. The midcap index is trading with moderate gains but the smallcaps continue to trade strong. Asia has shown smart recovery from the day's low. Hang Seng has shown a recovery of 1000 points.
At 13.05 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 39.09 points or 0.20% at 19672.45, and the Nifty up 3.20 points or 0.05% at 5910.85.
About 2096 shares have advanced, 896 shares declined, and 74 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap index is up over 1% and the smallcap index is up 2%; giving market a positive breadth.

Markets trading flat; smallcaps outperform
The markets have pulled back from the early lows but are still flat. Realty, power, IT and capital goods stocks are under pressure, but the banks, durables and metals are in green.
At 11.31 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 36.72 points or 0.19% at 19596.64, and the Nifty down 9.35 points or 0.16% at 5898.30. About 2078 shares have advanced, 917 shares declined, and 71 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the Sensex are ACC at Rs 1,126 up 3.89%, Reliance Energy at Rs 1,853.95 up 1.46% and Reliance Comm at Rs 719 up 1.23%.
Top losers on the Sensex are BHEL at Rs 2,720 down 2.28%, DLF at Rs 932.85 down 1.58% and Maruti Suzuki at Rs 1,038 down 1.47%.

Mkts open with gap down on weak global cues
The markets opened on weak note today on the back of weak cues from the global markets. At 10:05 am, Sensex was down 177.17 points at 19456 and Nifty was down 67.05 at 5841.
Major losers were BPCL, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Infosys, DLF, ICICI Bank, Rel Comm and SAIL. However, Axis Bank, GAIL. IOC, Power Grid and RNRL were among top gainers.
Asian markets plunged today as financials in the region were hit by a sell-off on Wall Street. Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 3.21% or 881.19 points at 26,578.98. Japan's Nikkei fell 1.9% or 285.89 points at 14,756.67, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted slipped 3.29% or 285.93 points at 8,394.78, Singapore's Straits Times dropped 1.99% or 67.82 points at 3,343.90 and South Korea's Seoul Composite plunged 3.40% or 64.43 points at 1,829.04.
US markets: The Dow plunged 218.35 points, or 1.66%, to 12,958.44. The S&P 500 index fell 25.47 points, or 1.75%, to 1,433.27, and the Nasdaq composite index slipped 43.86 points, or 1.66%, to 2,593.38.
