New Delhi: The Railways is likely to miss its revenue target of about Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the current fiscal.
The Railways is expected to fall short of its targeted revenues by as much as Rs 2,322 crore mainly due to lower passenger earnings.
As per official data, Railways is projected to see gross traffic receipts to the tune of Rs 1.04 lakh crore for the year ending March 31 compared to budget estimate of Rs 1.06 lakh crore.
However, the expected receipts would be much higher than the amount of over Rs 94,000 crore seen in the 2010-11 fiscal. In the current financial year, earnings from passengers - travelling in upper and second classes -- are projected to fall short by about Rs 1,656 crore at Rs 28,800 crore. The budgetary estimate stood at Rs 30,456 crore.
On the other hand, earnings from goods is anticipated to meet the target of Rs 68,620 crore this fiscal.
Presenting the budget for 2012-13, Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday proposed higher passenger fares to net additional Rs 4,000 crore annually.
The hike would be effective for suburban and non-suburban fares, ordinary second class mail and express fares, sleeper class, first class, all AC class travel and Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duranto and Janshatabdi trains.
