In view of reports of arms smuggling into the area, police and state administration were keeping a close watch.

New Delhi: The scene of violence over reported notification for land acquisition for an SEZ at Nandigram in West Bengal's East Midnapore district remained tense for the third day on Friday.

In view of reports of arms smuggling into the area, the police and the state administration were keeping a close watch on the situation.

Reviewing the situation at a high-level meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, state Home Secretary P R Roy said on Friday that additional reinforcement would be sent anytime to Nandigram, but the government would like the situation to normalise there.

"There will be massive arrests", as quoted by PTI, Roy said at the state secretariat in Kolkata. EFR, RAF and SAP personnel were posted there.

To a question about arms being smuggled into Nandigram, Roy said that the government was keeping a close watch.

The situation turned worse on Thursday when a section of the villagers dug up roads and blocked them with felled trees and boulders to prevent police entry.

Fifteen policemen were injured, three seriously, in Wednesday’s violence at Nandigram during which the gram panchayat office was ransacked by a rampaging mob angry over reported notification for land acquisition for Salim Group's SEZ at Nandigram.
