Industry leaders want tougher laws to fight terror.

New Delhi: Describing the Mumbai terror strike that claimed at least 101 lives as an "attack on Indian economy", industry leaders on Thursday called for "stronger leadership and tougher laws" to fight the menace.

"Last night's attack is a clear and unambiguous attack on the Indian economy and all its participants. It is time we all join this debate on terrorism and demand stronger and firmer leadership and approach to this threat of terrorism, including better laws," Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) president Rajeev Chandrasekhar said.

"Indian business and its various stakeholders have, so far, been mute and very detached from this debate on terrorism and tougher approach to terrorism and terrorists," Chandrasekhar, who is also a member of Parliament , said.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM), another major industry lobby, condemned the series of terrorist attacks, describing it as a "dastardly and cowardly act, which will never destabilise the economy".

"Such a heinous act has no place in any civil society and therefore these anti-national forces should be dealt with iron hands," Assocham president Sajjan Jindal said in a statement.

He added that terrorists will never succeed in their mission to divide the country as law will take its own course.

Jindal further said the nation should maintain calm at this critical juncture as otherwise panic would spread.

According to Bajaj Auto Chairman and Managing Director Rahul Bajaj: "There is a need for tougher laws to crack down on terrorism".
