Many shops in Nellai have imported Christmas decorations from outside the district.

As the Christmas season dawns, the air is filled with festive cheer and the spirit of celebration. Just like everywhere else, the festival is celebrated with full enthusiasm in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The entire state becomes immersed in the festive spirit of Christmas, with local bakers crafting piping hot rich plum puddings and cakes straight from the ovens. Streets light up with twinkling decorations on trees, and the air is filled with the pleasant sound of church bells, creating a magical celebration atmosphere.

Christians in this region are actively engaged in transforming their homes into vibrant displays of joy and merriment. The quest for the perfect Christmas decorations has led them to explore a variety of shops in prominent areas like Palayamkottai, Swaminathapuram, Vannarpettai, Town, and beyond. These shops sell excellent decoration items including stars. The rising popularity of L.E.D. stars is one of the notable trends in Christmas this year. These dazzling creations, adorned with lights, have become a favourite among the locals.

Jefferson Rajasekhar, Assistant Manager at Diocese Book Depot in Palayamkottai says, “L.E.D. Stars created with lights have increased in popularity among people. People like to buy these stars as they give more light with less electricity. Usually, the star is sold at Rs.100. Santa Claus clothes, beads, plastic and paper decorative flowers, etc., have also come up for sale.”

To enhance the variety available, many shops in Nellai have imported Christmas decorations from outside the district. This infusion of external influences adds a touch of global elegance to the local festivities, offering residents a chance to explore unique and exotic items to enhance their Christmas decor. “Apart from this, huts and toys are sold to explain the birth of Jesus in the cowshed,” he added.

One can also opt for nature-inspired decor items like wood-related items. Consider incorporating elements like pinecones, rustic wooden ornaments for the home, and garlands crafted from twigs and berries. Meanwhile, preparations for the festival kick-off at the start of December and continue even beyond New Year. Churches are adorned with festive lights, and the joyous tunes of carols echo through the night until the early morning hours.

Tirunelveli, also known as Nellai, is a city in Tamil Nadu. It is the sixth-largest municipal corporation in the state, following Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Salem.
