ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Official New Format Explained For Upcoming 20-Team Competition
The multi-nation event is set to get underway on June 2, with the USA and Canada going head-to-head in the inaugural clash.

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will feature a total of twenty teams including the co-hosts– West Indies and USA. The multi-nation event is set to get underway on June 2, with the USA and Canada going head-to-head in the inaugural clash. The opening match will be played at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The final of the 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled for June 29 and will be hosted at Bridgetown in Barbados.

Apart from the hosts USA and West Indies, ten more teams were handed direct entry to the mega event. The eight best-placed teams of the 2022 T20 World Cup– England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia and the Netherlands didn’t have to feature in the qualifying campaign. Bangladesh and Afghanistan also earned automatic qualification as per the T20I team rankings.

Meanwhile, the remaining teams had to prove themselves in the regional qualifiers. Canada emerged victorious in the Americas qualifier while Ireland and Scotland made it to the main event after winning the European campaign. Among others, Namibia and Uganda won the Africa qualifiers, Nepal and Oman progressed from the Asia qualifiers and Papua New Guinea triumphed in the East Asia-Pacific qualifier.

ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Format:

All the participating teams have been pooled into four groups of five sides each. Members of every group will take on each other once during the league stage. As per the accumulated points, the top two teams of each group will qualify for the Super Eight stage. These 16 teams will be divided into two groups and the top two will reach the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-final will lock horns in the final.

Tied And Washed-Out Matches:

In case of a tied match, a Super Over will decide the winners. If that also fails to separate the two teams, another Super Over will be played. If rain or bad weather plays a spoilsport during the group stage or Super-Eight matches, each innings will need to have at least five overs to decide the winners. For the knockout matches, the minimum requirement is ten overs.

The first semi-final and the final also have 190 minutes of additional time and a reserve day to battle the washout scenario. The second semi-final, however, will not have any reserve day due to time management issues.

England are the reigning champions of the Men’s T20 World Cup. They will begin their campaign with a match against Scotland on June 4.
