India Legend Labels Rohit Sharma's Men 'Pretty Ordinary' After Team Succumbs to Bazball

England’s win over India in Hyderabad is being hailed as their biggest triumph since the arrival of ‘Bazball’ era with their captain Ben Stokes himself calling it his ‘greatest victory’ since taking over the team’s rein in Test cricket.

Despite conceding massive lead in the first innings, England made a remarkable recovery in the second innings of the series opener thanks to a memorable 196 from Ollie Pope who defied India spinners with plenty of reverse sweeps helping his side set a challenging target of 231.

In reply, India were quite poor with the bat and had it not been a late fightback from KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin, they the defeat margin of 28 runs could have been bigger.

“England were brilliant over the last two days. India were pretty ordinary. In the field, you could see that heads were dropping down while fielding,” Kumble told JioCinema.

England brought Bazball to India and stuck to their aggressive tactics to take 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The legendary Anil Kumble feels that the home team could have shown a more positive intent with the bat and that the turning point of the contest was the run out of Ravindra Jadeja.

“India could certainly have been more positive in their batting approach in the second innings. Once Rohit Sharma got out and Ravindra Jadeja was run out, the course of the match changed,” Kumble told JioCinema.

“Credit to England (for) the way they batted (and) the way they came and bowled. I mean Tom Hartley, (a) debutant, (his) first ball (was) hit for a six and then the first five overs he was going at about seven runs an over,” Kumble he added.

England debutant Tom Hartley was bullied in the first innings by India batters as he leaked 131 runs in 25 overs for a solitary wicket. However, he bounced back and stormed to a seven-wicket haul in the second dig to spell India’s demise.

“To come back and bat really well, take two wickets (one) in the first innings and seven in the second and win the match for England was absolutely fantastic. England have done exceptionally well,” Kumble said of Hartley.
