For Virat Kohli, winning an Indian Premier League (IPL) title seems like a too-long bridge to cross. The Indian batting icon has been featuring in the franchise competition since the inaugural 2008 edition. As part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli might have shattered many individual records in his 16-year-long IPL career but never managed to break through the ultimate hurdle. This time, RCB have been knocked out of the tournament after losing the Eliminator clash to Rajasthan Royals. Kohli has no doubt tried his best. He has racked up 741 runs in 15 matches and looks sure to clinch the Orange Cap at the end of the season.
Following RCB’s defeat in the Playoffs, Kevin Pietersen dished out a suggestion for Virat Kohli. The former English cricketer wants Kohli to join another IPL franchise ahead of the next IPL edition in a bid to end his long wait for the coveted title.
To give logic to his remark, Pietersen referred to some football icons like Lionel Messi, David Beckham, Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, who had switched teams in the past to achieve success.
“I have said it before and I will say it again — the greats of the game in other sports have left teams to go and seek glory somewhere else. When he has tried and tried so hard — won the Orange Cap yet again and done so much yet again, and the franchise fails again,” Kevin Pietersen was quoted by Times of India as saying on Star Sports.
Highlighting Virat Kohli’s loyalty towards the Benglauru-based franchise, Pietersen further added, “I understand the brand of the team and the commercial value he brings to the team… But Virat Kohli deserves a trophy. He deserves to play in a team that could help him to get that trophy.”
Kevin Pietersen also had a suggestion for Virat Kohli regarding his next destination. The Englishman reckons Kohli may ply his trade for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming season of the IPL as the Indian batter has his roots in the city.
“I actually think it should be Delhi. Delhi is the place where Virat needs to go. Virat can go away and stay at home most of the time, I know he has a home in Delhi. He has a young family. He can spend more time there. He is a Delhi boy. Why can’t he go back? Delhi are as desperate as Bengaluru,” Pietersen said.
Virat Kohli served as the captain of RCB for nine seasons from 2013. Under his leadership, the team reached the Playoffs four times and featured in the final of the 2016 IPL. Faf du Plessis took over the reins from Kohli ahead of the 2022 season.
