The former India batter, Sunil Gavaskar has revealed his picks to start in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 opening game against Ireland that is set to take place tomorrow at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
There has been a lot of chatter regarding where Virat Kohli would be positioned in the batting order considering he has seen success in the recently concluded Indian Premier League season where he finished as the highest run-scorer for the season. For the Indian team, he has primarily been utilised in the number three position.
Gavaskar while speaking to Star Sports, suggested that Virat Kohli should open at the top of the order along with the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for the Ireland game. He also suggested that Yashasvi Jaiswal be dropped down to number three.
Interestingly, Yashasvi Jaiswal who has been firing inconsistently was not given a chance to bat.

“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to open the batting along with Yashasvi Jaiswal at three”, Gavaskar said on Star Sports while giving his preferred line-up for the game.
As for his pick for the wicketkeeper role, the former Indian international went for Rishabh Pant instead of Sanju Samson and went for Mohammed Siraj to partner Jasprit Bumrah in the pace-bowling department.
As for the spin department, Gavaskar opted for the pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav which means the likes of Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal miss out.

Most recently, the Indian team had gone up against Bangladesh in their only warm-up game before their campaign and managed to dominate on all fronts as they beat their neighbours by a whopping margin of 60 runs. Among the positives were the likes of Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh.

After the game against Ireland, India will take on arch-foes Pakistan here on Sunday. Rohit Sharma and his boys will be looking to put up a title charge once again and possibly end the title drought that has been plaguing them for the past 7 years.
