Royal Challengers Bengaluru seemed down and out and far away from IPL 2024 playoffs qualification when they lost seven of their first eight matches of IPL 2024. Despite Virat Kohli scoring runs in truckloads, RCB could not buy a win that saw them languish at the bottom of the table for most of the first half of the 2024 season. An unbearable one-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 21 seemed to be the final nail in RCB’s coffin for this season.

But after that match, RCB showcased a remarkable resilience, changing their approach and with some ultra-aggressive batting and bowlers stepping up to the plate, they set the ball rolling and eventually ended up with six straight wins to seal the final playoff spot. The icing on the cake was eliminating arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings in a do-or-die clash. Their juggernaut though was stopped by Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad in IPL 2024 Eliminator, but RCB’s performance in the business end of the tournament was one of the most remarkable comebacks in the league’s history.
Has Dinesh Karthik Retired From IPL? Every Hint RCB Gave After IPL Eliminator Heartbreak
As Virat Kohli puts it, the reason for that incredible turnaround was that the players started to express themselves. With nothing to lose, they played for their own self-respect, and that proved to be the catalyst in RCB’s reversal in fortunes.
Kohli admitted that the team’s performance in the first half of the season was below par, saying they did not live up to the expected standards.
Not a Guard of Honour, But Dinesh Karthik Leads RCB Team Out of the Field in Possible Farewell
“To be very honest, the first half of the season was really under par. Performance from us, the standards that we have as cricketers, we were not living up to those standards,” said Kohli after the RR vs RCB game, reflecting on the team’s IPL 2024 journey in a video shared on the team’s social handles.
“And then, you know, we just started expressing ourselves, started playing for our own self-respect and then the confidence came back and the way we turned things around and we qualified was truly special. Something that I’ll always, always cherish and remember because it took a lot of character and heart from each member of this team, something that we can be really proud of. And eventually we played the way that we wanted to play,” said Kohli on the turnaround of fortunes.

Virat Kohli Thanks RCB Fans
A dejected Kohli did not forget to thank the RCB fans for their unwavering support.
“The support from the fans obviously is unwavering every season. And this season was exactly the same. It wasn’t any different and we’re very thankful for that. And we’ll always be grateful for the way they turn out in numbers, not just in Bangalore, but all over the country when we play. So, thank you very much for all your support and your wishes,” he added.
