Riyan Parag and Harshit Rana got maiden India ODI call-ups as the BCCI on Thursday announced the much-anticipated squads for India vs Sri Lanka white-ball tour starting July 27 with Rohit Sharma back as the ODI captain with a new deputy – Shubman Gill.
Parag’s inclusion comes at the expense of Sanju Samson, who faced the axe from the 50-over format, despite scoring a century in his ODI that he played vs South Africa in December 2023.
Surya Named T20I Captain; Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad miss out
Suryakumar Yadav was named the T20I captain ending speculations over who will take over the reins from a retired Sharma in the shortest format, with Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya missing out on the leadership role. Shubman Gill is the designated vice-captain in T20Is with Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammad Siraj returning.
From the Zimbabwe tour, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhruv Jurel, Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma, Abhishek Sharma, Avesh Khan, Tushar Deshpande, Harshit Rana and the highest wicket-taker in the series Mukesh Kumar miss out, while Ravi Bishnoi, Parag, Khaleel Ahmed, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson retain their places. Kuldeep Yadav meanwhile fails to find a place in the T20I squad.
Shubman Gill V/C for ODIs; Sanju Samson Faces Axe
In the ODIs, captain Rohit Sharma returns alongside Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Samson remains a big miss as selectors opt for the all-around ability of Parag. With Rahul and Pant already in as two wicketkeeping options, it was tough to pick Samson and he, unfortunately, missed out. Pandya is not named in the ODI squad as was reported earlier while Jadeja is the other big player omitted from the ODI squad. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are the spin-bowling allrounders in the squad while Kuldeep and Bishnoi will be the frontline spinners.
With Jasprit Bumrah rested Mohammad Siraj will lead the pace bowling attack with Khaleel, Arshdeep, and Rana for company, Avesh Khan misses out from both squads.
The upcoming tour will be a first as Gautam Gambhir is set to begin his coaching stint with the upcoming away series and will look to begin his tenure off on a positive start.
