Watch: Shreyas Iyer Recreates Lionel Messi's FIFA World Cup Celebration With IPL Trophy

An unstoppable Kolkata Knight Riders thumped Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) to take home their third title. The Kolkata-based side waited for this moment for a decade.

They previously became the champions in the 2014 edition under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir. This time, Shreyas Iyer was the man who led KKR to glory.

SRH were never able to trouble their opponents at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, making it a one-sided IPL final. After KKR registered an eight-wicket victory in the summit clash, the winnings captain, Iyer was spotted recreating football icon Lionel Messi’s title celebration after he captained Argentina to FIFA World Cup title win in Qatar.

Messi fulfilled his dream of lifting the coveted World Cup title in December 2022. After Argentina edged past France in a thrilling finale, the Argentine was handed the trophy by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

As Messi’s teammates awaited on the podium to celebrate the historic triumph, he made them wait for a few more moments before joining in.

Iyer did exactly that after BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Jay Shah presented him with the IPL trophy at Chepauk.

Iyer started strolling towards his KKR teammates which reminded fans of Messi’s World Cup celebration.

Drawing parallel, a user dropped both clips on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “Shreyas Iyer does Messi celebration with the IPL Trophy before giving it to Rinku Singh.”

The title triumph was quite a statement from Iyer whose name was omitted from BCCI’s central contracts list earlier this year.

Iyer was also part of Mumbai eleven that defeated Viedarbha in the final of Ranji Trophy this year.

In IPL 2024, KKR have lost just thrice as they finished at the top of the table and continued their dominance in the playoffs too.

They comfortably overcame Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1 and beat the same opponent in the title clash.
