BSF And RAF: Roles, Eligibility Criteria And Key Differences
In the event of natural disasters and other disruptions, the Indian Army performs humanitarian rescue operations.

The Indian Army, a part of the Ministry of Defence, is one of the world’s largest armies. The President of India, who also serves as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy, is in charge of the Indian Army. The main duties of the Indian Army are to preserve peace and security within the country’s boundaries and also guard the country from external attacks, and ensure national security and unity. During natural disasters and other disruptions, the Indian Army also performs various rescue operations.

One of India’s four border patrol forces, the Border Security Force (BSF) is the largest in the world and guards the borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan. While its primary responsibility is border security, the BSF has also been called upon to handle other security-related issues, including insurgency, terrorism, disaster management, and maintaining domestic peace. Whereas, the Rapid Action Force (RAF), is a specialised unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which was founded in October 1992 to handle riots and other public disturbances

BSF: Know The History

The Indian government’s paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) was established in the year 2000. It was founded as a central agency on December 1, 1965, to secure India’s borders. Managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the BSF is regarded as one of the biggest border-guarding units in the world. This force was known as the Border Security Force of India and Pakistan (BSFIP) before Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

After this, the BSF has been in charge of guarding India’s borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan. Apart from this, the BSF was successful in fighting various security concerns, including illegal immigration, weapons and drug smuggling, and infiltration attempts

RAF: Know The History

A zero-response force called the Rapid Action Force (RAF) can be quickly called to respond to a disaster. The public is reassured and feels secure as a result. On October 7, 2003, the then-Deputy Prime Minister of India, Shri L.K. Advani, presented the RAF with the President’s Flag in recognition of its selfless contribution to the country. The RAF has a separate flag that is a symbol of peace. The RAF also provides training to both male and female contingents for UN peace operations. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) is one of the special units of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Leading it is the Inspector General. It has 15 battalions, numbered 99 to 108 and 83, 91, 97, 114 and 194. It is also headed by an Inspector General.

Difference Between BSF and RAF

Twenty-five state police border battalions were combined to form the BSF. This new force included five of the twelve Indian Reserve battalions. The Director General is in charge of it. With 220,000 soldiers, the BSF is composed of 159 battalions. Whereas, the official with the rank of Inspector General leads the Rapid Action Force (RAF). An inspector-led squad is its most basic functional unit. Each squad consists of three units including a fire unit, a tear gas unit, and a riot control unit. The groups are set up as separate troops capable of attacking. Women troops make up one team in each RAF company so that situations involving female protestors can be handled more skillfully.
