Actor Rohan Gurbaxani, known for his role in Arjun Varain Singh’s Kho Gaye Hum Kahan as Ahana’s (played by Ananya Panday) boyfriend, believes his acting degree from NYU is simply a skill advantage. He says that its value lies in how effectively he can really utilise it. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha following the film’s release on Netflix, the actor discussed his experience of breaking into Bollywood as an outsider, shared his thoughts on Ananya Panday, and talked about working with Zoya Akhtar.
Speaking about how difficult it was to break into a space like Bollywood, he said, “I never went into acting, thinking how insulated it is. I went in thinking that if I work hard enough, and if my performances are are on a par with what is considered good, I will be taken seriously. I shouldn’t have to tell anyone that I am from NYU, and I’ve done a course in acting. One may be from NYU, Yale, or NSD, but at the end of the day, if you fit the role, you fit the role. For me, it was a lot of blind WhatsApping, emailing producers unabashedly during the lockdown period. It is all about how you hustle when you are not working on your craft. It’s not easy breaking into Bollywood. People who achieved a lot aren’t just sitting there, enjoying their name and fame. They work very hard and when you get in, you compete with them,” he said.
Rohan has worked with Zoya Akhtar in Made in Heaven 2 and talking about working with her production again, he said, “I don’t know how to make sense of working with somebody like Zoya Akhtar, whose films I have grown up watching. I’m just grateful and I do not want to take my opportunities for granted.”
Rohan was all praise for Ananya as well. “I did a couple of workshops together. She is extremely professional. She may come across a young actress, but when you work with her, you truly understand why she’s able to do 2-3 films a year and why she’s a big name now. She has the professionalism and preparedness to be able to take up so much,” he said.
