Former cricketer Zaheer Khan and actor Sagarika Ghatge Khan first met at a common friend’s party and soon, love blossomed between the two. After keeping their relationship hush hush, it was at Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech Singh’s wedding in 2016 that the world got a whiff of their romance. A year later, they exchanged rings and tied the knot.
And coincidentally, her last big screen venture Iraada released in the same year as her wedding. Over the years, her onscreen appearances have become sporadic with OTT projects like BOSS: Baap Of Special Services and Footfairy being the only two releases post 2017. But unlike what many reports claim, Sagarika asserts that she never stopped working because of marriage.
In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, she says, “That’s completely false. Touch wood, I’ve such a supportive husband, who gets the better out of me in anything I do. I feel he’s my biggest cheerleader today. Marriage hasn’t made me quit films at all. In fact, Zaheer’s the one who pushes me. I’ve also evolved over time because of Zaheer being in my life. He’s somebody who can change a negative thought into positive.”
While she has been missing from being in front of the camera, she launched a brand of exquisite hand-painted sarees with her mother a few years ago. And she credits Zaheer for nudging her towards this direction. “My brand Akutee was his brainchild. He was one who told me that this is something I need to do for my mum. He reminded me that I’ve been wearing clothes painted by my mother since I was very young. He made me do it saying that this is something I need to get out in the world,” she recalls.
And what about motherhood plans? “We see parenthood for ourselves, very much so. We both are very excited for that phase of life. Fingers crossed! We’re looking forward to it (smiles),” says the 38-year-old, who will be celebrating her seventh wedding anniversary this November.
The last few years of Sagarika and Zaheer’s lives have been a joyride. Quiz her about a similarity between them and she laughs and says, “We both are very bad with dates, Valentine’s Day and gifting. These things are not for us and so, we don’t feel bad about forgetting any date. But I don’t think all these things matter at the end of the day. It’s only the connection that matters.”
Love for good cinema is also something that has kept them close. Giving us a glimpse of the Ghatge-Khan household on a regular day, she shares, “Sometimes, I revisit my films and keep asking him to join me. It’s always a lot of fun with us being stupid together. For the longest time, I used to accuse of him of not watching Chak De India (laughs). And he would tell me, ‘Of course, I’ve watched it!’”
Sagarika adds, “He loves to watch interesting content and stimulate his mind. At night, we often put on something and being someone who generally sleeps early, I fall asleep. But he’ll finish what we had started. Zaheer watches a lot of content – documentaries, films and TV shows.”
