Italian skipper Fabio Cannavaro contract with Real Madrid ends June 30.

New Delhi: Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro is likely to return to Italy once his contract expires this summer.

The rumours that Fabio Cannavaro will return to Italy continue to gather pace as his time at Real Madrid seems limited.

Some reports recently suggested he could return to the peninsula even during the winter transfer window. However, it is more likely he will be leaving Madrid when his contract expires during the summer.

Spanish newspaper Marca has written that Cannavaro's representative, Gaetano Fedele, has admitted his client is close to agreeing a deal with hometown club, Napoli.

The Italy captain's contract ends on June 30, and reports indicate that Los Blancos have so far been reluctant to offer the 35-year-old defender a new deal.

The World Cup winner joined Real Madrid in 2006, when Juventus were demoted to Serie B following the Calciopoli scandal.
