Mohun Bagan Super Giant parted ways with Juan Ferrando as head coach on Wednesday and announced that technical director Antonio Lopez Habas will be taking over from the Kalinga Super Cup.
Under Ferrando, Mohun Bagan SG won the ISL trophy last season followed by the Durand Cup at the begining of this season.
For the ISL Cup win, for the Durand Cup win, for the numerous memories, thank you Juan!#MBSG #JoyMohunBagan #আমরাসবুজমেরুন pic.twitter.com/epkYctazOC— Mohun Bagan Super Giant (@mohunbagansg) January 3, 2024
In the Indian Super League season though, Mohun Bagan SG secured just one win in their last four matches, scoring five goals and conceding eight in this period, after an unbeaten record-breaking start. In the AFC Cup, Mohun Bagan failed to qualify from the group stage with loses to Maldives’ Maziya and Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings.
“Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s head coach is changing. Juan Fernando is stepping aside. Antonio Lopez Habas is taking charge of the Green and Maroon in his place. He will handle the duties of the head coach for the upcoming Super Cup. Thanks to Juan Ferrando for winning the ISL (2022-23 season) and this year’s Durand Cup(sic.),” said Mohun Bagan in an official statement.
Habas, who previously served as head coach of the Mariners from July 2020 to December 2021, will begin his second stint with the club. He is among the most successful coaches in ISL history, having won two ISL Cups and the only head coach to do it.
Some stories cannot be left incomplete…Welcome back, Señor Habas ♥️#MBSG #JoyMohunBagan #আমরাসবুজমেরুন pic.twitter.com/G9AITqzQtP

Mumbai City FC (Des Buckingham left for Oxford and being replaced by Petr Kratky) and Bengaluru FC (Gerard Zaragoza replacing Simon Grayson) have already parted ways with their coaches earlier in the season, while Jamshedpur FC recently announced the departure of tactician Scott Cooper and roping in Khalid Jamil in his place.
