Arsenal 2-0 Wolves
Arsenal opened their season with a win over visiting Wolves on Saturday as German Kai Havertz found the back of the net for Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, who go in search of a first PL crown in two decades.
Bukayo Saka’s brilliant cross into the danger area was headed home by Havertz to kickstart Arsenal’s thrust for the title after twice coming up second to Manchester City in back-to-back seasons.
Saka turned scorer in the 74th minute as Arsenal doubled their lead to cement their dominance in the game.
Everton 0-3 Brighton
Japanese international Kaoru Mitoma netted the first goal of the season for Brighton as he led the Fabian Hurzeler-coached side to a win in their season opener.
Danny Welbeck doubled Brighton’s lead in the second half with a 56th-minute strike. Everton’s woes worsened as Ashley Young was sent off six minutes past the hour mark and the Toffees were down to 10 men.
Simon Adingra put the result beyond doubt with an 86th-minute goal to add insult to injury.
The game also had another notable milestone as 38-year-old James Milner began his record 23rd season in the English top flight as he started for the seagulls in the win to kick off the campaign away from home.
Nottingham 1-1 Bournemouth
Chris Wood got Forest’s campaign underway with a 23rd-minute strike against the Cherries in their season opener.
Antoine Semenyo put the ball into the net to pull Bournemouth back on level terms to bag a share of the spoils.
Newcastle 1-0 Southampton
Joelington netted the Magpies’s first goal of the season in the first half of added time after going down to 10 men as Fabian Schar was given the marching orders after 28 minutes of play.
However, Eddie Howe’s men held on to the slender lead while battling with a man down.
