A leading Arab-Israeli actor has been detained on suspicion of “incitement to terrorism” over a social media post about Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, police and her lawyer said Tuesday. Maisa Abdel Hadi – who lives in the northern Israeli city of Nazareth – was arrested on Monday and placed in custody until Thursday, police said.
She is among the increasing number of Arab Israelis now detained for discussing the tragic war on social media. Hadi allegedly shared an image of a bulldozer breaching the fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel during the October 7 attack by Hamas, the Islamist militant group. According to Israel, this attack claimed over 1,400 lives, while the Hamas government in Gaza says that more than 5,000 people were killed in Israel’s retaliatory strikes on the coastal territory.
“Let’s go Berlin-style,” she wrote in a caption in reference to the fall of the Berlin Wall that partitioned Germany until 1989. “She is accused of supporting terrorism,” her attorney Jaafar Farah, who is also the director of the human rights association Mousawat, told AFP.
Recently, Arab Israeli singer Dalal Abu Amneh was also detained due to one of her social media posts. Rights campaigners and Israeli police have reported cases where members of Israel’s Arab minority and Palestinians in East Jerusalem faced job termination, college expulsions, and arrests over expressing solidarity with Gaza residents during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. It’s worth noting that Israeli Arabs constitute one-fifth of Israel’s population.
Closer home, TV actress Madhura Naik known for television shows like Hum Ne Li Hai- Shapath and Tumhari Pakhi has suffered a huge loss in the light of Israel-Palestine conflict. In her recent Instagram post, Madhura has disclosed that her brother-in-law and her cousin sister were brutally murdered by Palestinian terrorists.
