Steps

Say there’s something special about her.

Tell her that she sparkles and shines in her picture. People love hearing that they’re photogenic! Give her a simple, kind compliment that really can’t be taken the wrong way. It’s just a nice thing to say and she’ll appreciate it. You could try, “I can’t quite put my finger on it, but you’ve got something special going on” or “Whatever it is, you’ve got it!”

Compare her to something beautiful.

Make her blush and make your compliment more powerful. Try not to say vague things she's probably heard before in movies about how her face is like a work of art or reminds you of a symphony. Instead, use other specific examples of beauty to really drive your compliment home and give it some extra “oomph.” For instance, you could say, “Wow! You look like one of Rembrandt’s masterpieces!” or “You’re so peaceful in this photo. It makes me feel like I’m listening to Debussy or another great composer.”

Mention something that reminded you of her.

It could be a movie, a song, or just something you loved. It doesn’t have to be directly related, but if her photo brings something else to mind, tell her about it. She may find it fascinating and flattering that she could inspire something inside of you. For example, you could say, “I don’t know why, but your picture made me think about the movie La La Land! Maybe it’s just because I love that movie and I love this photo.” You could also try something a little silly like, “This picture is like a slice of cheese pizza: it’s perfect.”

Tell her you’ve been thinking about her picture all day.

Let her know she’s been on your mind. Talk about when it popped in your head and how it made you feel. She may feel touched and flattered that her picture stuck with you so strongly. You could try, “So, I just have to say, I’ve been thinking about this picture all day! At work, at lunch, driving home—everywhere! It’s really great.” You could also mention how her picture made you feel better with something like, “I was having a super stressful day and this photo completely fixed it.”

Tell her how much you love her smile.

Say that it’s radiant and lights up a room. What girl doesn’t like hearing her smile is beautiful? Talk about how cute or glorious it is to you. Tell her you love to see her happy. You could say, “You have such a gorgeous smile. Seriously.” You could also try, “You have the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”

Talk about her eyes.

Tell her you could stare into them forever. Sure, it’s a bit of a cliché to talk about how dreamy someone’s eyes are, but it’s still a great compliment. Talk about how pretty her eyes look and how they really “pop” in her photo. She’ll love it! Say, “Your eyes are gorgeous. They’re so bright and full of life.” You could also try, “I love the color of your eyes. They’re so rich and vibrant.”

Praise how healthy her skin looks.

Talk about how pretty it is in the photo. Tell her it’s radiant and looks so clear and smooth. You could also compliment her skin-care routine and tell her that whatever she’s doing, it’s working. She’ll love hearing how vibrant she looks. You could try, “Ugh. Your skin is so perfect. I love it.” Another option is to try, “I’m so jealous of your skin. It’s so clear and healthy, even without makeup.”

Focus on her hair.

Let her know that you like her look. What girl doesn’t like hearing about how great her hair looks? Tell her you love the way she fixed it and that it’s a great hairstyle. If she recently changed or cut her hair, talk about how much you like the new ‘do. It’s a simple and effective way to brighten anybody’s day. You could keep it super simple with, “I always love the way you do your hair. It’s so pretty.” Try something specific like, “I just love the way you part your hair. It really frames your face perfectly.” You could also say, “Love the new hair! It’s a really great style.”

Talk about how much you like her outfit.

Praise her style and fashion sense. She likely put a lot of thought into choosing her clothes, so why not give her the credit she deserves? Tell her what you like most about her outfit and get specific with it. She’ll be glad you noticed. You could try, “I love the way your whole outfit goes together. Even your shoes are perfect.” You could also try, “That shirt looks so good on you!”

Mention her choice of accessories.

Notice the little things she chooses to wear. A lot of effort goes into putting a full outfit together, all the way down to the jewelry. Pick out an accessory that she’s wearing and talk about why you like it so much. She’ll love that you’re catching the small details. Try, “That ring is so cool, and it goes perfectly with your outfit.” You could also try, “Where’d you get that necklace? It looks so good on you.”

Point out something you like about the picture.

Get specific to let her know you mean it. You don’t have to compliment something about her body! Take a look around the photo and choose something that stands out. Bring attention to it with a nice compliment and it’ll make her day that you noticed! For instance, if she posts a picture of herself hiking a trail, you could say something like, “Wow! That’s a tough trail. You’re a rockstar!” If she takes a really striking picture of a landscape, you could compliment her photo skills with something like, “You have such a good eye! Nice shot!”

Praise the colors in the photo.

Tell her that you love the quality of the photo itself. Taking a really good-looking photo is tough! If she really captured a nice image, tell her about it. Comment on the way she uses light and the clarity of the photo. She’ll appreciate the compliment. You could say, “I love the way you caught the shadows here. It’s really cool!” You could also try, “You should be a professional photographer! This is really high-quality stuff.
