Everyone has different tastes when it comes to food. Some eat a lot of spicy food and others prefer keeping it light. But did you know that having spicy non-vegetarian food more than three days a week can cause various health problems? According to a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford, people who consume a lot of red meat and processed meat have a higher risk of developing colon cancer.
According to a report, people who eat red meat and processed meat at least three times a week have a higher risk of nine types of diseases. Let’s take a look.
1. Digestive Ailments
Consuming non-vegetarian food more than three times a week gives rise to many digestive problems. The protein content in it is quite higher than that required by the body, which makes digestion difficult. It may also lead to acidity and constipation, which in turn might cause other digestion-related complications as well.
2. Expected Life Reduction
According to studies, if one consumes non-vegetarian food daily, it may reduce their life span. Vegetarians are expected to live a longer life than non-vegetarian food lovers.
3. Health-Related Diseases
In red meat, the cholesterol present may result in the accumulation of fats (cholesterol) in the veins and arteries, which will cause obstruction in the blood vessels, which further results in major health-related problems like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hypertension (increased blood pressure), cardiac arrest, atherosclerosis, etc.
4. Antibiotic Resistance
The method of growing animals on farms is unhygienic. Many drugs such as antibiotics are often administered during the regular maintenance of these farm animals. These antibiotics might enter the food chain and the body of someone who consumes them. This may lead to severe problems related to immunity.
5. Hormonal Imbalance
Consuming a large amount of meat causes the ingestion of more cholesterol which may result in a steroid hormonal imbalance.
6. Red Meat and Cancer
According to the Oxford study, consuming a large number of red meat might result in several cancer types, such as prostate, breast, kidney and digestive tract. Among all cancer types, colon cancer has a strong link with red meat intake and well-processed meat.
7. Heart Diseases
According to studies, consuming processed meat products increases the risk of heart disease. Frequently consuming meat may lead to a high-risk factor for heart disease.
8. Obesity
The study has linked the intake of red and processed meat with obesity. The key reason for quick weight gain is the high calorie and protein content. Yet, some studies showed weight loss in spite of a higher intake of meat.
9. Type II Diabetes
As per the study, when one consumes a high amount of red meat daily, there is a lot of chance that one will develop type II diabetes.
