One soldier has been missing while a second one was rescued after an avalanche hit their post in the Kargil sector two days ago, the Army said on Saturday.

The two soldiers who were on surveillance duty were swept away in the avalanche. One of them was later rescued while there was no trace of the second soldier.

"A natural avalanche triggered by a mild earthquake hit an Army post located at an altitude of 17,500 feet in Kargil Sector of Jammu and Kashmir on March 17, 2016. Immediate rescue operations were launched in which one soldier could be rescued while the second soldier is still missing," a statement from the Army read.

"The rescued soldier is medically stable and is recovering. Search operations to rescue the missing soldier are currently on in spite of the adverse weather conditions. The rescued soldier is medically stable and is recovering," it said

An avalanche warning was issued earlier for higher areas of Jammu and Kashmir, advising people not to venture out over the next 48 hours.

Last month, 10 soldiers were buried under snow after a major avalanche hit their camp in the Siachen glacier.
