New Delhi: Stepping up surveillance apparatus in Parliament in the backdrop of Mumbai attacks, government has decided to install around 300 latest cameras in the high security complex.

The new cameras, many of which will replace the ones installed nearly 20 years ago, will have high resolutions and enhanced memory capacity, a senior official of Parliament said.

"We are procuring about 300 hi-tech cameras to be installed in Parliament complex as part of the security up-gradation drive," the official said.

Currently there are about 265 cameras installed in Parliament complex which were installed in early 1980s.

"So it was decided to replace these with the latest ones," the official said, adding this was being done to "meet the present requirement".

The move comes close on the heels of Mumbai terror attacks, which have shaken the security establishment of the country to go in for a revamp of safety systems at sensitive installations.

After the 2001 attack on Parliament, Government had undertaken a massive security upgradation of the complex by installing hi-tech imported gadgets worth over Rs 100 crore.

Three PSUs involved in installing these state-of-the-art cameras made a presentation of the functioning of these equipment in Parliament this week for the members of the Parliament committee on security.
