THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Drinking water being distributed through pipe will be made available to 50 per cent of families in the state within two years, Irrigation Minister P J Joseph said here on Tuesday.According to the 2011 Census, there are 77.16 lakh families in the state. Of this, only 29 per cent families now have access to drinking water. Briefing mediapersons about the achievements of the Irrigation Department on the first year of the UDF Government, the Minister said old and damaged motors and pumps would be replaced with new ones. He said 74 water distribution projects and 265 works included in the NABARD projects are progressing. 49 drinking water projects would be completed within this financial year itself, he said. Rs 750 cr for Ernakulam Dist Joseph said projects worth Rs 750 crore would be implemented in the Ernakulam district with JBIC assistance. Besides this, JNNURM schemes for Rs 200 crore have also been planned for Ernakulam. For solving the problem of recurring pipe bursts in the capital city, tenders worth Rs 50 crore have been invited. State-level scheme sanctioning committee has also approved works worth Rs 180.95 crore. Toll-free number, 1800-425-5313 - has been introduced to register complaints with the Kerala Water Authority.Kuttanad PackageThe Minister said projects worth Rs 3000 crore had been sanctioned so far under the Kuttanad package. Jalanidhi projects will be started in 200 panchayats this year. One pond each will be dug in all the panchayats of the state, Joseph said.
