ATS told the court Sadiq had no connection with IM.

New Delhi: A key accused in the 7/11 Mumbai serial bombings case has been let off by a Mumbai court. Mohammed Sadiq Shaikh has been discharged from the case due to lack of evidence.

The Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) took Sadiq into its custody after the Crime Branch claimed he had confessed to planting some of the bombs which rocked Mumbai on July 11, 2006. Sadiq's alleged confession was even aired by some news channels.

On April 20 though, the ATS told the court that its investigation had revealed no links between Sadiq and the Indian Mujahideen.

Sadiq is an electronics engineer who was arrested in September 2008 by the Mumbai Crime Branch in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts. He later claimed he and several others engineered the 7/11 train bombings on the instructions of his mentors, Riyaz Bhatkal and Amir Raza.

In his statement to the Crime Branch, Sadiq had claimed that they manufactured the bombs at a flat in central Mumbai. However, the ATS rubbished the claim, saying it was an elaborate al-Qaeda ploy to mislead investigation.

They still sought Sadiq's custody from the Crime Branch to investigate the case.
