CHENNAI: Dancer Deepa Lakshmi Vijay has undergone rigorous training in imbibing the technical nuances of the Kalakshetra tradition. This was evident when she presented her programme for the Tapas Academy at the Muthamizh Peravai Mandram. Ganesa Vandanam in Raga Nattai was the opening number to which she paid her obeisance to Lord Ganesha. It was followed by a varnam on Lord Brahadeeswara in Raga Sankarabaranam. The essence of the raga coupled with beautiful lyrics gave the performance a deep devotional touch. The state of the nayika, longing for the love of Lord Shiva in the composition of the Tanjore quartet, was portrayed well. The bhava coupled with the Sanchari Bhava in the varnam was appreciable. She executed all of it with confidence and ease. Her abhinaya skills during the song Adi Kondan Andha Vedikkai Kana of Muthuthandavar, that followed in Raga Mayamalavagowla, deserves special mention. The concluding item, Thillana in Ragam Shanmugapriya, was danced immaculately, with good adavus and jathis. Handling verses, with sustained and proper emotional development, requires a great deal of confidence and inner strength. The artiste certainly fulfilled her responsibility. But yet, I felt that the lyrical expressions coupled with rhythms should have been brought about with a nuanced feeling, without making it drab at times. The artiste was ably supported by Eswaran (Vocal), Mohanam (Nattuvangam), Anil Kumar (Mridangam), and Shivkumar (violin).
