KOCHI: Jivadhara, an Ernakulam-based medical institution, has come up with a unique method to treat mental and physical disabilities, including chromosomal disorder. Many of the diseases such as down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and muscular dystrophy have no or limited treatment in Allopathic method. The treatment looks at combining Electro-homeopathy and Acupuncture. The system was developed by the head of Jivadhara, Sr Mary Eassy, in her doctorate work.Sr Mary is an associate member of The World Society of Alternative Medicines, the US and a member of the Instituto Internacional De Terapia Holistica of Spain.“We concentrate on younger children. In the cases of children above 15 years old, the probability of recovery is less. Since we have limited resources and space we are considering cases where we can assure maximum cure,”said Sr Mary Eassy. Nevertheless, the institution has several cases where recovery has been found possible in adults.“As there is no other treatment for these disabilities, the institution is a hope for families with disabled children,” says Reena, (name changed), mother of an 8-year-old autistic child. Reena, a BSc Nursing graduate from Dubai, now looks at getting trained in Jivadhara. Within a year after its opening, the institution caters to more than 170 patients up to the age of 15 years. However, the major constraint before the institution is that it doesn’t have any formal approval yet.“We are trying to get an approval from the IGNOU,” Sr Mary Eassy said. “We are also approaching universities for a comparative study on the topic as it is necessary to get Allopathic doctors’ acceptance.”However, she discloses that she doesn’t know the exact chemical processes that lead to recovery of the problems, especially in chromosomal disorders.Eventhough this is making quite a few medical experts to cast a suspicious eye on the treatment, the patients do not seem to bother and the steady increase in their number is proving that.
