CHENNAI: Revealing extraordinary technical virtuosity, with his bowing strength, violin maestro TN Krishnan, in the company of his daughter, Viji Krishnan gave an exhilarating performance at the Arkay Convention Centre at Mylapore, where he presented his concert for Laya Mathura. When they commenced with Kambodhi varnam of Swathi Thirunal (Sarasijanabha) weaving its beauty in the middle and higher octaves, the revelation of the composer’s symbiotic relationship with music became very evident. The Nada Chintamani Kriti of Thyagaraja (Evarani Nirnayichiri), that followed, exhibited with a vein of musical fervour animated in the Kirthanas, revealed the intent of the composer. He was accurate with his alluring fingering techniques and his laya projections in the Pantuvarali Keerthana of Thyagaraja (Raghuvara) where Thyagaraja beseeches Rama for His divine grace. It was brought out so perfectly, proving the sayings of Dennis Stoll – “The passage from one note to the next becomes a subtle adventure in portamento gliding and vacillating variance in micro totality”. When (Thaye Yasodha) of Oothukkadu Venkata Subbaier in Thodhi Raga was presented next, it brought out the charming nuances of the raga, thanks to his intellectualised intuitive imagination at Kalinil Silambu Konja with swaras resembling Veda recitation. The entire hall reverberated with applause at this effort.Undoubtedly, Viji Krishnan has an amazing understanding of the ‘Sookshama’ of the grammar, that makes her performance outstanding. It gets the listeners’ hearts hooked to its melody.TV Gopalakrishnan, Mridangam maestro who always presents a picture of laya grace deserves a word of praise.
