THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was quite an unexpected meeting. While visiting the stalls at the Revenue District Science, Mathematics, Social Science, Work Experience, IT Fair 2011-12 put up at St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Pattom, Minister V S Sivakumar met his daughter Gouri Nair accidentally. “Though he knew that I too participate in the event, both of us got wonder-struck when he entered our stall,” said a thrilled Gouri.Gouri and her friend Karthika P Madhu, both Plus-I students of the Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School, have displayed a still model, based on various problems faced by women, in the section of Social Science Fair.  “Though the topic is about women’s issues, it is not on a feminist point of view. Nowadays many atrocities against women are happening and their security at times falls under threat. We are expressing our concern on such issues,” she said. Low-wage labour, domestic violence, intrusion into privacy, molestation and domination of rich over poor are some issues showed in the model. There were also some newspaper cuttings on several problems faced by women. The science exhibition brimmed with the concerns of students in various matters which threaten the nature such as the menace of waste management, global warming, energy conservation, electricity generation and air pollution.Amid the whole collection exhibits, there were some items which stood apart for its variety of presentation. The model of ‘vertical farming’, made by Anjitha S and Malu V J of St Chrysostom’s school, Nellimoodu, about utilising minimal space for cultivating plants in apartments, attracted the crowd. The vertically-spiraling structure has various layers for farming. “Even bonsai trees can be planted in various compartments aligned vertically. Space utilisation along with promoting agriculture can be accomplished through this,” says Anjitha. Another interesting model exhibited at the fair was the ‘Magnetic Mixer Grinder’, made by Nanda Gopika and Aswathy P of Malayinkeezh Girls H S S.  It showed how the potential energy can be converted into magnetic energy to make the mixer function so as to conserve electricity. In the science exhibition, projects, still-models and working models were on display. Apart from this, there were science drama, quiz and talent search programmes. Paper cuttings, atlas making, collections, projects, still and working models are the categories in the Social Science fair. IT fair comprised IT quiz, digital painting and Malayalam typing. Maths and Work Experience sections are slated for Friday. Students from 12 sub-districts participated in the fair. It will conclude on Saturday.  Minister V S Sivakumar had inaugurated the fair the other day.
