PHULBANI: Cases were registered against Maoist leader Sunil and 25 others at the Daringbadi police station on Tuesday in connection with the kidnapping of two Italian nationals from Daringbadi area on March 14. The cases were registered on the report of Santosh Kumar Moharana of Puri who was also abducted by the Maoists and later freed along with another Kartik Parida.“After reaching Puri, Moharana lodged an FIR with the Sea Beach police at Puri which was forwarded by Puri police to their Kandhamal counterparts,” said Kandhamal SP JN Pankaj. As per the FIR, all the four reached Daringbadi on March 12 for a four-day trekking trip. After a night halt at a church at Gada Pakhal, they went to the forest on March 14. They walked down for about one-and-a-half hours in the jungle and then bathed in a river.Thereafter, they were preparing to cook food, when at least eight armed persons asked them to lie face down at gun-point. The rebels then tied their hands and blindfolded them. They were then made to walk for several hours in the forest, after which the Maoists inquired them about their identity. Moharana, however, wrote in the FIR that they were not harmed in any way.Later, they were accompanied by two old persons, who took them out of Daringbadi. Moharana said the rebels gave him two CDs to be handed over to Bhubaneswar-based journalists.
