Locals believe that when Goddess Chamundeshwari got engaged in the severe battle to slay the demon Mahishasura, a unique challenge arose. It is believed that, as Chamundeswari wounded the demon, a new Mahishasura was born after each drop of the demon’s blood fell on the ground, which made it impossible to defeat it.

To encounter this, Goddess Chamundeswari in created Uttanahalli Maramma from the sweat of her own body. Goddess Maramma a powerful form of goddess, played a significant role in ensuring the victory over the demon.
