BANGALORE: “What would have happened if Dr B R Ambedkar would not have taken birth in India? We would not have had a Constitution.He laid the foundation for a democratic India through the Constitution,” Jnanpith Award winner Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar said on Wednesday.He was speaking at a programme organised to mark the 121 birth anniversary of the Architect of Indian Constitution Dr B R Ambedkar, 105th birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram and the 16th anniversary of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWWSSB) Sanitary Workers’ Union at the board’s office on Wednesday.Speaking on the occasion, Urban Development, BWSSB, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Sureshkumar said, “Crores of drowntrodden would not have had a voice if Ambedkar was not there.Mahatma Gandhi ensured that the country got independence, but Ambedkar provided Constitutional guarantee to the people.”Appreciating the service being rendered by the sanitary workers, he said, “They are real doctors of the city.”He assured them that he would look into their problems.Kumar said the state government would urge the Union government to honour actress Jayanthi, who was present on the occasion, with Padmashree award.
