The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by N Chandrababu Naidu, appears set for a significant comeback in Andhra Pradesh, according to early vote-counting trends for the state’s Assembly elections.
The TDP is leading in most assembly as well Lok Sabha seats, surpassing the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) led by Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The latest trends show that the NDA alliance — which includes TDP, JSP, and BJP –is ahead in over 154 of the 175 Assembly seats and in 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats. In contrast, the ruling YSRCP is leading in only 19 Assembly seats and 3 Lok Sabha seats.
This election is a three-way contest involving the ruling YSRCP (part of the Congress-led INDIA coalition), and the BJP-led NDA alliance, which includes TDP and Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (JSP). According to the seat-sharing agreement among the NDA partners, TDP contested 144 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats, BJP contested 10 Assembly and 6 Lok Sabha seats, and JSP contested 21 Assembly and 2 Lok Sabha seats.
The elections were held on May 13 for 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh.
The last Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections were held on April 11, 2019, alongside the Lok Sabha elections. Like this election, the main parties were the TDP, YSRCP, and the Jana Sena Party.
2019 Assembly Election Results:
In 2019, the YSRCP won 151 of the 175 Assembly seats with a 49.95% vote share, while the TDP secured only 23 seats with 39.17% of the votes. The JSP, allied with the BSP and the Left, won one seat, garnering 5.53% of the votes. Neither the BJP nor the INC won any seats.
2019 Lok Sabha Election Results:
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the YSRCP dominated by winning 22 of the 25 seats (49.89% of the votes), while the TDP won three seats (40.19%).
2024 Lok Sabha Election Trends:
The results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are expected shortly, with vote counting underway under tight security. Early trends show the BJP-led NDA leading in over 290 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA bloc is ahead in over 227 seats, contradicting exit poll predictions. A close contest is observed between the NDA and the INDIA bloc in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
