After watching the last episode of 'Splitsvilla 7', I came to a conclusion that the easiest way of boosting a show's TRP sky high is by adding more glamour. And what could be a better way to spice up the show than by featuring a scantily clad damsel and if it's a foreign import then there is nothing like it. This is one of the many instances where women have been portrayed as an object of desire on Television. Objectification of women on TV has always been there and it's only increasing with time.
In the reality show 'Splitsvilla', girls fight for the guy's attention and they are judged on the parameters of hotness. If they are sensuous and have that oomph factor, they have all the chances to win to show . The tasks are also based on the parameters of sexiness. How well can the girl seduce the boy? Whose silhouette is more alluring? And so on. The show's concept is in such a way that it can't help but portray girls as objects and nothing more.
And why just 'Splitsvilla'? There are other shows like 'Fanaah- An impossible Love Story' and 'Laut Aao Trisha' on the list as well. These shows are following the same route and portraying women as just mannequins on display.
The question is- Can the 'Splitsvilla' damsels step out on the street with the same attitude as they have on the show? Is our country really that safe for women that they have the freedom to wear anything they wish and move out freely. Wish it was, but seeing the number of rape cases chances are bleak that one really has the freedom to do that.
On the contrary there are daily soaps like 'Shastri Sisters' and 'Diya Aur Baati Hum' that showcase such strong characters that one could take inspiration from them.
Such contrasting portrayal of women on Television, makes us wonder where are we heading to?
