Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal — currently in judicial custody — filed a plea on Tuesday, seeking permission to consult his regular doctor through video conferencing as his blood sugar levels are fluctuating.
His application was filed before Special Judge Rakesh Syal in the Rouse Avenue Court. Judge Syal asked the Enforcement Directorate to file a response by April 18.
The counsel appearing for the probe agency, which arrested Kejriwal in the excise policy case on March 21, opposed the AAP chief’s plea and argued that there are facilities necessary for such patients within the jail, adding that he can be examined there itself.
Kejriwal’s counsel, in response, asked “Why is ED opposing if I (Kejriwal) am taking care of my health?” He urged the court to allow the virtual consultation for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief.
The next hearing in this matter will take place on Thursday, April 18.
Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody till April 23. It also refused an early hearing of the Delhi CM’s plea challenging his arrest.
This development came after the top court postponed the plea of Kejriwal on the week starting from April 29. The SC also asked the ED to file its response on or before April 24.
Appearing for Kejriwal, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, had told the apex court that the arrest was made to disable him from campaigning.
Lodged in Tihar Jail, Kejriwal faces allegations of direct involvement in a conspiracy related to the formulation of the excise policy favouring specific individuals. He is also accused of collecting kickbacks from liquor business owners in exchange for favours, the ED had said.
