New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Union Government to file an affidavit before it on what steps it had taken to ensure the safety and security of Indian in Australia and Canada following a spate of brutal attacks on the community.
The government has been asked to file the affidavit by June 26.
A vacation Bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Asok Kumar Ganguly asked Solicitor General for India to assist the government on the matter.
The order came on a PIL filed by advocate D K Garg over the racial attacks on Indians in Australia and Canada.
"I have filed a PIL in Supreme Court. I want to know from Government of India what steps they have taken to protect racial attacks on India students abroad and in Australia," said Garg explaining why he filed the PIL.
There have been 14 attacks on Indians in Australia recently while six Indians were assaulted in Canada earlier in June.
Indians living in Australia have carried out massive protests against the racial attacks.
Minister of state for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor had commented on the measures taken by Australian government against the hate attacks.
"We are deeply anguished over the attacks. India wants to see better measures taken by the Australian government," the Minister of state for External Affairs said on June 20 in Kochi.
