A police station in Tarabari village, situated in Bihar’s Araria district, was vandalised and set ablaze by angry villagers after a man and his ‘minor’ wife allegedly died by suicide while in police custody.
According to locals, the man and his wife were detained by the police shortly after their marriage. They allege that the couple died in custody after being beaten by officers.
The man had lost his wife over a year ago. Two days before the incident, he married his late wife’s 14-year-old sister. However, they were detained by the police on Thursday afternoon.
In India, the legal age for women to marry is 18.
Following the news of the couple’s alleged suicide on Thursday evening, anger swept through the area, prompting enraged villagers to surround the Tarabari police station and hurl stones at the police personnel, as per NDTV report.
The situation escalated as the villagers went on a rampage, vandalising the police station before setting it ablaze. At least five police personnel sustained injuries during the incident.
Officials stated that upon receiving information about the incident, police personnel from multiple stations, including Sadar SDPO Rampukar Singh, arrived at the scene. Despite their presence, the angry villagers persisted with their protest, raising slogans against the police.
Locals alleged that the couple died in custody due to police negligence after being subjected to beatings. However, the police have refrained from commenting on the matter so far.
