BANGALORE: In an attempt to consolidate all their research units, Biocon inaugurated its Integrated Research and Development Centre, Biocon Research Centre (BRC). The centre was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Prof Kurt Wuthrich.On the occasion, Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw stated that 300 scientists would be part of the new unit, but did not specify the time line in which they would be recruited.Speaking about the BRC, she said that the centre was also equipped with cutting edge instrumentation for extensive molecular and functional characterisation of Biologics.Prof Kurt Wuthrich said, “I will keenly watch the outcome of innovation from this centre as I see a lot of promise in the scientific talent at Biocon. I extend my best wishes to Biocon.”Shaw added that they aspired to build a centre of research excellence that would pursue an innovation led effort to develop advanced yet affordable solutions for several debilitating diseases.The company aims to attract outstanding scientists from the best institutes around the world and engage with international thought leaders as well as participate in technical programs as an effective way to enable innovation through knowledge sharing.Further, the company officials said, an independent quality group at BRC will ensure compliance to good laboratory practices and International regulatory guidelines for developing ‘best in class’ biologics and biosimilars. The centre will comprise units such as Molecular Biology Lab, Biologics Process Science Labs, Formulations Development Lab and Molecular Characterisation Lab.
