BALASORE: The labourers of Birla Tyres have stopped production completely for the last couple of days over their long-standing demands. The labourers have been protesting delay in wage settlement. The management is finding it hard to resolve the issue as several rounds of talks with the labour union leaders and officials have failed. Sources said though the previous long-term wage settlement expired in September and workers were looking ahead for revised wages, the trade union and the management failed to reach at any conclusion. Around 2,095 workmen would be benefited once the agreement is finalised for the next three years. Earlier, the settlement was stalled as the union demanded revoking of suspension of 41 workmen. Though the management revoked the suspension and allowed them to join duty, no settlement could be reached. While the company suggested a four-year wage agreement plan with a proposed hike of `1,000 for the first year, followed by `500 each in next three years, the recognised trade union - Birla Tyres Workers’ Union - which demanded a hike of `3,200 at one go refused to oblige. In an appeal to all workmen,  the management has urged them to cooperate to reach at a settlement citing that the authorities have agreed to give a substantial hike despite the fact that the company has incurred a loss of `144 crore during 2010-11. On Friday, DLO SK Choudhury wrote to the management asking them to convene a meeting of all trade unions and settle the wage for a long term.
