NAMAKKAL: A 75-year-old man was burnt alive after a fire gutted his thatched-roof house near here on Friday.According to police sources, three houses, including the one in which the victim was staying, were gutted in the fire. A senior police official said, “The victim, Rangan (75) of Arunthathiyar Colony in Vittamanaickenpatti was bed-ridden for quite some time. His daughter and her husband, along with their child, were away at work. He could not be saved as nobody was at home.” It took fire and rescue personnel, who subsequently arrived at the spot, over an hour to contain the flames, according to the sources.A case was registered by the Namakkal police. Investigations were on to ascertain the cause of fire.According to sources, after battling the blaze for some time, the firemen ran short of water. Another fire tender was subsequently called in to help contain the flames, which by then had already caused a lot of damage.When queried, a fire department official pointed out that they were also running short of manpower. Although there were three fire tenders at the Namakkal station, only two drivers and a mechanic were available. “During emergencies, we have to run for help to operate the other tenders,” he noted.
