The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun its probe into allegations of substandard medicines being supplied to Delhi government hospitals. CBI officials told News18 that the probe began after two separate references were received from the union ministry of home affairs.

“Two references were received. One to examine allegations of substandard medicines being supplied to government hospitals and the second to see if mohalla clinics were also misused to benefit private labs. We are looking into both,” a CBI officer said.

The preliminary inquiry by the central agency is based on the details shared by Delhi’s lieutenant governor and a report of the directorate of vigilance, Delhi government.

The vigilance department after its inquiry had asked the union ministry of home affairs to recommend a CBI probe into the case.

L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena in his complaint sent to the ministry in December last year said at least five medicines in three Delhi government-run hospitals did not meet the required standards.

Saxena also made the charge that the AAP government was playing with the lives of Delhiites. “The drugs failed quality standard tests and had the potential of endangering lives in hospitals run by the Delhi government,” the L-G said after the vigilance report was submitted.

Allegations have been made that at seven mohalla clinics run by the AAP government, fake lab tests were recommended to patients or their phone and identity details were fraudulently used to benefit private diagnostic firms conducting bogus tests on paper.

The CBI is examining the charge that this scam ran into hundreds of crores of rupees. Agency officials said a decision on registering an FIR will be taken once the preliminary inquiry is over.
