CHENNAI: The XIII Metropolitan Magistrate here on Friday issued summons to Sun Pictures managing director Kalanidhi Maran and film director S Shankar to appear in person in a case involving copyright violation and cheating in connection with Tamil movie Endhiran.
Responding to a private complaint from writer Aarur Tamil Nadan against Shankar and Maran, who was the producer of Endhiran, alleging that they had violated the copyrights Act by stealing the story idea of Endhiran, the court issued summons to the duo to appear before it on June 24, after finding that a prima facie was made out.According to senior advocate K Elangovan, who represented author Aarur Tamil Nadan, Endhiran was bas ed on his story Jugiba, published in Iniya Udhayam magazine in 1996.

"In this regard, we have already filed a copyright violation complaint with the then city police commissioner T Rajendran, but the police failed to file an FIR and insisted on deleting the name of Kalanidhi Maran," said Elangovan. Being a producer and a person who made profit out of the movie, Maran's name should not be dropped from the complaint. Seeking justice, Aarur Tamil Nadan had filed a private complaint before the court in the April last, the advocate said.
