HYDERABAD: Hyderabad will be the first city in the country to have an ‘Integrated Emergency Response System’ which will have a call centre for dealing with all types of emergency situations on the lines of the ‘911 emergency number’ in the US.The Central government has selected Hyderabad for implementation of the project on a pilot basis.Speaking at a media conference here on Thursday, revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy said India and the US have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up the Integrated Emergency Response System, which will be an umbrella organisation for disaster management, health emergency, fire accidents and police. An integrated call centre will be set up for the four services like 100.A delegation of US authorities will visit Hyderabad in July-August to examine the facilities and discuss the implementation of the project.In the wake of south west monsoon, Raghuveera Reddy wanted the officials to strengthen disaster shelters and increase the preparedness to face the calamities.“In addition to the existing 1,000 shelters, 158 new shelters will be constructed and tenders have been invited for the purpose,” the minister said.It has been decided to develop the disaster shelters into ‘multi-purpose community shelters’.Stating that the automatic weather stations were giving very useful information, the minister announced that 320 new automatic weather stations will be established by the end of June in addition to the 800 stations existing in the state.It was also decided to provide training on tsunami and floods to five persons each from 520 coastal villages where the trained persons will help the villagers during emergencies.Meanwhile, the state government on Thursday appointed 23 senior IAS officers as special officers to each district for monitoring and coordinating with the district administration during natural calamities.
