CHENNAI: Women and girls in distress in the city are all set to get a fillip. Ashraya, a short home stay functioning as part of the Andhra Mahila Sabha, has received a shot in the arm after Soroptimist International Chennai Downtown has pledged their commitment to support the initiative. The home stay, which has been in existence for some time, provides shelter and food and also provides counselling and rehabilitation services for the inmates. To reinforce their commitment to the cause, Soroptimist International came out with a set of powters announcing the services of Aashraya. They were released by City Police Commissioner J K Tripathy to mark International Women’s Day. The posters would be distributed to all police stations.Naina Shah, Programmes Action Chairperson, Soroptimist International, said that the all-women organisation also proposes to start off a sanitary napkin advocacy programme at the home wherein the inmates would be sensitised about biodegradable sanitary napkins. The organisation would also help them set up units for manufacturing napkins either as self help groups or as individuals. The 24-hour centre also had arrangements to offer vocational training to the women who come there for short duration of stay so that they can be rehabilitated through jobs. The counsellors also attempt to reconcile the woman with her family, she added.
