KOTTAYAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday said the media had all rights to criticise the mistakes in society if it helps in strengthening the democracy in the country. Inaugurating the ruby jubilee celebrations of the Press Club here, he said politicians should learn to accept the criticisms made by the media whenever they went wrong. The policy of basking in praises and frowning at criticisms made by the media should change, he said.However, Chandy suggested the media to make reports which were productive, genuine, factual and realistic.Speaking about the growth of the Press Club, he recalled and hailed the decision of the then Revenue Minister K T Jacob during 1969-70 to offer 2.5 cents of land for setting up the Press Club.Chandy hailed the decision-making ability of the minister who brushed aside the bureaucrats stand that there was no precedence of giving land for a Press Club.Chandy said the Kottayam press club was a witness to his political life for the last 40 years.Speaking on the occasion, Finance Minister K M Mani urged the media to embark on a research to face the future development in the media industry with the IT field recording much developments. Mani said the media has changed much with the new concept of citizen journalism gathering acceptance. This has given little scope to hide or cook up stories, he said.
