BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday demanded that the next of the kin of the workers who have lost their lives in accidents during construction work of modernisation of the Rourkela Steel Plant should be taken care of by the company. In a letter to Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma, the Chief Minister has referred to recent accidents during the construction work of the modernisation of the Rourkela Steel Plant in which two workers died. While one lost his life on December 2, on Sunday one contractual labourer was killed and another was seriously injured. The Chief Minister said since SAIL is the largest steel manufacturer in the country and a Maharatna company, it is expected that they would adhere to world class safety standards. It must be ensured that the safety norms are not compromised at any cost in all work procedures, Naveen said and added that unless this is done, there may be recurrence of such tragic incidents which is just not acceptable nowadays. Naveen requested the Minister to look into the matter personally and issue strict directions to the concerned officers to ensure adherence to safety standards in all work procedures and prevent accidents in future.
